Professional Development

The Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Washington, D.C. (RPCV/W) has evolved into a vibrant community dedicated to fostering connections among former Peace Corps volunteers. On this page we’ve provided professional development resources broken down into Mentoring, Job Seeking Resources, and Additional Resources for Members.

Mentoring

Do you have experiences worth sharing? Or are you looking to connect with someone who has been where you want to go? RPCV/W offers two mentoring options for you to professionally connect within the RPCV community!

Structured mentoring program. Three months, one match.

RPCV/W participates in the RPCVnexus-organized community-wide mentoring program that matches RPCVs with professionals across a wide range of fields, sectors, and geographies. Cohorts form in February and August and mentors and mentees meet virtually over three months.

Connecting for conversation. No agenda, no timeline.

Looking for something more informal? Or interested in meeting up with someone in the area whose work you admire?

This self-match option connects you directly with DMV-based professionals who are open to an in-person conversation. No need to apply, and you jointly set the commitment length. Check out the volunteer mentors below and click on their profile for contact information to get started!

Informational Interviews

Career service professionals note that networking and connections are a typical way to find out about and land a new role. There are tons of resources available online on how to conduct informational interviews, so we’ll focus on a few ways to find people to connect with.

  • Join an upcoming RPCV/W event and introduce yourself to someone you don’t know!
  • If you hold a degree, did you know you can easily find alumni from your alma mater on LinkedIn? Navigate to the school’s page, click on Alumni, and then use the filters or search to refine by employer, location, field, skills, and more.
  • Check out Creative Mornings, a free monthly in-person speaker series on rotating topics with attendees from a range of fields.
  • Look at what free, in-person events think tanks are hosting on topics you are interested in to meet speakers or fellow attendees. Some of the more prolific in the DMV are the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Brookings Institution, and the Center for Global Development.
